Driving Harare to Headlands: The Perfect Day-Trip Itinerary & Road Review

For anyone planning a family gathering, a weekend getaway, or a quick road trip down the A3 highway (R5 road) toward the Eastern Highlands, here is a first-hand look at what to expect on the road, where to stop, and how to make the most of the journey.

On a recent winter Sunday (the 5th of July), we set out from Harare to the quiet farming hub of Headlands for a very special occasion: my father-in-law's birthday lunch.

1. The Ride: Upgrading to a Premium Mid-Size SUV

If you are traveling with family, highway comfort and reliable ground clearance are non-negotiable. For this trip, we opted to rent a 2025 Hyundai Creta from Yarutso Car Rental in Harare.

  • The Cost: $100 per day.
  • The Verdict: Exceptional. The Creta handled the highway beautifully, offering a smooth, quiet cabin, modern tech integrations, and the peace of mind you want when driving on Zimbabwean highways.

2. Road Quality & Tolls (Harare to Headlands)

The A3 highway is currently one of Zimbabwe’s most well-maintained regional corridors.

  • The Drive Time: It took us exactly 2 hours to cover the distance from Harare to Headlands.
  • Tollgates: Traveling only as far as Headlands means you only encounter one tollgate (the Melfort Tollgate, located near Ruwa/Goromonzi).
  • Toll Fee: $4 USD for light passenger vehicles.

The road is generally wide, well-marked, and free of the major potholes that plague older routes, making it a highly accessible drive even for those less familiar with the highway.

3. The Ultimate Pit Stop: Surrey Meats

No road trip on this route is complete without stopping at Surrey Meats, located roughly 40 km before you reach Marondera. It is a legendary roadside landmark for a reason.

We pulled over to stretch our legs and grab some road snacks. We walked out with:

  • Fresh, perfectly cured biltong.
  • Surrey’s famous meat pies—widely and rightfully considered the absolute best pies in Zimbabwe. They are served hot, packed with filling, and have the perfect flaky pastry.

4. Destination: Birthday Lunch at Halfway House, Headlands

After picking up Dad from church, we headed straight to Halfway House. Conveniently situated right on the A3 highway, this historic establishment has been a welcoming oasis for travelers since the 1890s.

The Dining Experience

We spent a leisurely 3 hours enjoying a family birthday lunch in their relaxed, welcoming courtyard.

  • The Food: Absolutely delicious, hearty, and freshly prepared.
  • The Pricing: Surprisingly affordable, making it a fantastic spot for large family gatherings where you want great value without compromising on quality.

Art, Antiques, & Curios

Before heading back, we took some time to browse the on-site curio and antique shop. If you appreciate local craftsmanship, it's a goldmine. The shop is filled with beautiful, intricate silverware and stunning stone and wood sculptures that make for incredible souvenirs or home decor pieces.
